Progressive Nation 2008

When: Sat., May 3, 7 p.m. 2008
Price: $43-$53

There are few areas in modern music where ability is both an asset and a liability, and perhaps none more divisive than progressive rock. To outsiders, the genre's unusual time signatures, grandiose arrangements, and overblown solos evidence little more than pompous wankery. Fans, conversely, take no uncertain pride in appreciating music that confuses -- maybe even repulses -- the average pop music fan. All judgment aside, the best contemporary prog-rock bands, such as New York's Dream Theater, write complex, technically demanding songs beyond the scope of most rock and metal acts. That's what the Progressive Nation 2008 tour, featuring openers Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and 3, is all about, which stops by the Paramount Theatre (2025 Broadway, Oakland) on Saturday, May 3. $43-$53, 7 p.m. ParamountTheater.com
