Pretty Lights

When: Thu., Aug. 8, 4 p.m. 2013
Price: free
If you didn’t snag tickets to the sold-out Outside Lands festival this weekend, where Pretty Lights will play on Friday night, you can still catch the electronic music star — for free. Pretty Lights (aka Derek Vincent Smith) has earned a large following — one that extends beyond hard-partying ravers — for crafting melody-heavy tracks that explore rock, soul, and hip-hop. On his new album, A Color Map of the Sun, Smith opted to make his own samples, rather than revert to the cratedigging he’s known for, and the result is an homage to American music of the last century. Smith taught himself to use analog synthesizers to write the album, which he recorded with fifteen musicians in a pre-Seventies studio setup, ensuring the sound retained a lo-fi quality. Smith enlisted soul singers and rappers such as Eligh, The Grouch, and Talib Kweli to present his lyrics, which are heavily inspired by Sixties soul and R&B. At Amoeba San Francisco (1855 Haight St., San Francisco), expect Smith to play tracks new and old, after which he’ll sign albums.
