Pretty Lights

When: Fri., Sept. 14, 7:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $39.50

Like Gregg Gillis (the musician behind Girl Talk), Derek Vincent Smith -- aka Pretty Lights -- is one of those mash-up prodigies who started producing hip-hop as a teen, and ultimately fled academia to be a beatmaker. In his case, it was a smart move. Pretty Lights entered the festival circuit in 2009 playing big-shed events like Bonnaroo and the Electric Daisy Carnival, and solidifying his career with a gig at Coachella the following year. By then, he'd worked out the perfect performance setup, combining a DJ rig -- laptop, cross-fader, turntables -- with live drums, provided first by Cory Eberhard, then by Adam Deitch. His music is a little less concept-driven than that of Gillis, and more oriented toward providing a dance soundtrack than cannibalizing the entire pop music canon. His main talent is for mixing disparate genres in a surprisingly seamless way -- e.g., the bass line for Judy Clay and William Bell's "Private Number" with added strings and a vocal loop from Flo Rida. But that's only a small taste of what Pretty Lights can do. He'll perform with DJ Shadow, Marty Party, and Paul Basic at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (99 Grove St., San Francisco) on Friday, Sept. 14. 7:30 p.m., $39.50.
