Unassuming documentary wins sympathy for a group of inner-city Philadelphia African-American high school students – including a refugee from West Africa and a hulking football lineman — who get drilled in the disciplines of professional restaurant cuisine by a demanding teacher in hopes of winning scholarships. Part of teacher Wilma Stephenson’s program is to get them to abandon their “ghetto palates” and focus on the big prizes of life: excellence and a job. Directed by Jennifer Grausman and Mark Becker (99 min.).
