Documentary, Music
She may swab floors and care for patients at a New Orleans senior facility, but in her dreams Samantha “Princess Shaw” Montgomery is a heart-breaking R&B diva with a devoted worldwide following. Voila! As filmmaker Ido Haar’s worthwhile doc tells the story, an Israeli videomaker and musician named Ophir “Kutiman” Kutiel falls in love with the Princess’ music and, without telling her at first, puts an orchestra of internet-connected backing musicians to work behind her songs. Suddenly she’s a YouTube sensation. Haar wisely soft-pedals the instant-star kitsch of the story to focus on Princess herself, pain and all. That takes guts. It’s the sadness that hooks us (80 min).
