Portraits from Oakland

When: Jan. 18-Feb. 18 2012
Price: free

The New York Times recently anointed Oakland as one of the world's top tourist destinations in 2012 because of its stellar restaurants and bars, so kudos to EastBay gourmets. Locals already know the non-gustatory virtues of Oaktown. For a year, Bay Area Photographers Collective members Henry Bowles, Anthony Delgado, Ralf Hillebrand, John Martin, Charlotte Niel, and Gary Weiner have been documenting First Friday's diverse, eclectic audience. Improvising studios in unused 25th Street retail spaces, they have captured the lively spirit of Oakland's multicultural, multiethnic mix, creating an album and time capsule of the civic family -- Avedons for the democratic 99 Percent. Mommy, Daddy, what did you do during Art Murmur? Just kidding. Now about reinstating those food trucks .... Portraits from Oakland runs through Feb. 18 at PHOTO (473 25th St., Oakland). 510-847-2416 or PhotoGalleryOakland.com
