Action/Adventure, Animation, Family
Trapped by human-made sea junk near the shore, a little goldfish girl is rescued by a kind-hearted five-year-old boy called Sosuke, who gives her the name Ponyo. They become best friends and together embark on a strange, watery journey to restore the balance of nature, no less — in filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s perceptive (but not overbearing), sweet (but not especially cloying) animated adventure, a kids’ story for all ages. Very much in the spirit of Miyazaki’s ecologically minded animes, particularly Princess Mononoke. The first-rate voice talents in the English version include Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Frankie Jonas as Sosuke, and Noah Cyrus as Ponyo. Recommended (100 min.).
