Home, according to Maria MazziottiGillan, is not just a physical location but a spiritual dimension somewhere between memory and the emotions of the heart. In her new book of poetry, The Place I Call Home, the director of the creative writing program at the Binghamton Center for Writers writes about her life, starting with her youth as an Italian immigrant, through her relationships as a young woman, and ending with memories of her late husband. Using straightforward language and vivid images that express a range of emotion, Gillan writes poems that everyone can appreciate. At Moe's Books (2476 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley) on Thursday, Sept. 13 (7:30 pm, free) and Berkeley City College Auditorium (2050 Center St., Berkeley) on Tuesday, Sept. 18 (7 p.m., free).
