When: Dec. 3-Jan. 2 2011

The title of this two-person show presumably has two meanings: plot as narrative and plot as piece of land. Samantha Lautman's large graphite drawings ("Cemetery," "Flight," and "The Crowd") and graphite-acrylic painting ("The Apartment") depict groups of people engaged in various activities, as seen from high vantage points. The narratives are unclear, as in drawings in her previous show at Kala Gallery, depicting real-life random activity from a god's-eye perspective. Plots of the real-estate type and the symbolism of architecture are explored instead inJeff Ray's mixed-media, pedestal-mounted architectural sculptures in sheet metal ("Commerce Building," "Home (Basic)," "Cultural Center," and "Spiritual Center"), which include sound effects and LED lighting. The dark unadorned forms, rusting and sharp-edged, have a rather sinister, conspiratorial air, on third thought. Plot runs through January 2 at Royal Nonesuch Gallery (4231 Telegraph Ave., Oakland). 415-690-3041 or
