Anyone in Maroon 5 who’s not Adam Levine tends to get sidelined, but PJ Morton has proven to be a talented musician all on his own. A keyboardist in the famous pop rock band, he moonlights as a solo R&B artist and released his fourth album last year, Gumbo. Morton produced the album himself, and it features collaborations with Pell, BJ the Chicago Kid, and The Hamiltones. Gumbo was positively received by critics but didn’t achieve much mainstream popularity — a dynamic he addresses on “Claustrophobia”: PJ, you’re not mainstream enough/Would you consider us changing some stuff, he croons. While Morton seems more concerned with doing his own thing than pleasing the masses, his soulful cover of the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love” is certainly a crowd-pleaser.
