Comedy
For people who can never get enough ‘60s rock on the soundtrack, the film event of the year. But practically anyone else can find a laugh in the antics of a crew of radio deejays blasting the Kinks, Who, Troggs, Turtles, Hollies, Easybeats, Jeff Beck, Dusty Springfield, et al., to English listeners from a ship anchored in the North Sea. On board are Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rhys Ifans, Bill Nighy, Nick Frost, and Tom Sturridge among the deejays, with a frothing Kenneth Branagh as the sinister government minister sworn to shut them down, and Emma Thompson as somebody’s mod mum. It’s a vinyl nerds’ summer camp on the high seas, directed with infectious glee by Richard Curtis (Black Adder, Four Weddings and a Funeral) from his own screenplay. British title: The Boat That Rocked (135 min.).
