Pints & Pickin' at the Plough with Mississippi Mike & The Midnight Gamblers

When: Sun., June 26, 3 p.m. 2011
Price: $8

Bandleader and ace country guitarist "Misisipi" Mike Wolf might recoil if you call him by anything other than his trademark stage name -- the spelling of which, mind you, is three consonants short of the state of his birth. That said, he's Mississippi-bred through and through, with the vocal twang and the cheeky sense of humor to prove it. Wolf plays guitar for local rock band Grand Lodge and several other groups, including Misisipi Rider, The Mission Three, the Graveside Singers, the Afternoon Delight Social Band, a Ween tribute called Golden Eel, and a roots-country outfit called Misisipi Mike & The Midnight Gamblers, with which he'll take over the Starry Plough pub this weekend. The band features fantastic, fiddlacious fiddling by violinist Leif Karlstrom. Wolf handles the bulk of the songwriting -- he writes at the prodigious pace of roughly a song a day -- and all the Southern Gothic-style poster art. Check the Gamblers out at the Starry Plough (3101 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley) where they'll play alongside honky-tonk bands Calafia and The Mutineers. Sunday, June 26, 3 p.m. $8
