Pinkish Black

When: Tue., Oct. 15, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $17
The fact that Pinkish Black gets its name from the purported color of the blood-stained walls found in the aftermath of a former bandmate’s suicide gives you an idea of the gloominess surrounding this Fort Worth, Texas duo. But the darkness is not entirely without light: The band culls its influences from new wave as much as from heavier, experimental sources (think Gary Numan, Amebix, Swans). Vocalist/keyboardist Daron Beck brings a dramatic, operatic flair to the proceedings, while drummer Jon Teague pounds out aggression assuredly and, at times, bleakly. While Teague and Beck have been playing in bands for years (and were previously in the experimental doom trio The Great Tyrant together), it was only with Pinkish Black’s self-titled debut last year that they’ve gained wider notoriety (thanks largely to a Pitchfork review). Razed to the Ground is the band’s new album, and like the first record, it sounds like an exorcism, but also an exaltation. At Oakland Metro Operahouse (630 3rd St., Oakland), with Kylesa, Sierra, and Embers.
