Even for non-fans of dance, this 3D (!) performance documentary profile of choreographer Pina Bausch and her Tanztheater Wuppertal ensemble provides a spectacular show of movement and stagecraft. Writer-director Wim Wenders (Buena Vista Social Club, Wings of Desire) is clearly thrilled to capture the imaginative Bausch’s startling set pieces in The Rite of Spring and Café Müller – and if Bausch’s marvelous structures stress objectification a bit too heavily, it’s all done with a wry Teutonic sense of humor (that’s not an oxymoron). The scenes in downtown Wuppertal and the nearby forest are wonderful, as is the music in general, from needle drops to the original score by Thom Hanreich. Recommended. (106 min.)
