.Pilot Projects to Fight the Next Oakland Hills Fire

Chip Johnson uses the Angel Island fire as an opportunity to highlight two projects to leave the Oakland Fire Department better equipped to respond to hills fires and makes sure the 1991 blaze never happens again. The programs aren’t exactly jaw-dropping. One’s a plan to switch to a digital-radio system, so radio calls don’t overwhelm the narrow band of analog radio currently used by most fire departments. Ideally, this will help firefighters coordinate with one another more effectively. Sounds great, but it’s still just a plan. The second initiative is the acquisition of new fire trucks that can navigate the winding hills roads better. Again, sounds great, but the Oakland Fire Department has exactly three of these bad boys. Still, it’s better than nothing, we guess.
