Jaynelle St. Jean’s amazing seasonal pies now have a permanent brick-and-mortar home near Lake Merritt. The pies are sold whole, by the slice, and in individual-size mini pies. St. Jean makes the thinnest, crispest all-butter crust we’ve ever had the pleasure to try, and, as far as we can tell, there isn’t a bad pie on the menu. If you aren’t sure what to get, any of the cream pies are a good bet — none better than the holiday-special chocolate peppermint cream: smooth, rich chocolate infused with a blast of mint, like a sophisticated Grasshopper milkshake. Meanwhile, savory (egg-based) breakfast pies are available on the weekends.
