Drama, Romance
Filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson reteams with actor Daniel Day-Lewis for this puzzling, tantalizing, and ultimately highly rewarding “gothic” character study of a fictionalized high-fashion designer (Day-Lewis) and his obsessive relationship with his live-in assistant (Vicky Krieps), at the designer’s elegant London townhouse. Less a standard romance than a complicated emotional game of truth-or-dare, Anderson’s screenplay is bolstered by the brilliant support playing of Lesley Manville, the sumptuous wardrobe by Mark Bridges, and a delightfully apt music score by Jonny Greenwood (of the rock group Radiohead). High marks for Day-Lewis’ portrayal of Reynolds Woodcock, a joke-name he evidently thought up with Anderson. Yes, there’s a sense of humor in the midst of it (130 min., 2017, rated R)
