The “E” in Sheila E’s name stands for Escovedo, as in Pete Escovedo. The Pittsburgh, California native is a legend in his own right, even as he ushered “The Queen of Percussion” into the world. With his two brothers, Pete formed the Escovedo Brothers Latin Jazz Sextet, before Carlos Santana hired Pete and Coke for his group. He toured internationally with Santana for five years and performed on three of his albums. Afterward, he left Santana to follow in the musical footsteps of his mentor, Tito Puente, which led him to forming his own orchestra, Azteca, a 14–24-piece Latin big band. At the age of eighty-four, Escovedo is showing no signs of slowing down, now with a five-person horn section with, always, his legendary percussion.
