The life and times of Marjane Satrapi, a Tehran native who lived through much history, receive a striking animated treatment in this drama, a French-made adaptation of Satrapi’s graphic novel. Writer-directors Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud lend a magical visual sense to the overthrow of the Shah, the rise of the Islamists, the Iran-Irag War, etc., but there’s a problem with Satrapi herself –- as protagonist, she keeps running away from her repressive homeland. That’s not a good strategy for someone ambitious to tell more than her own personal story as a punk-rock-loving free spirit trapped underneath a burqa. Could have been much more, but then, it’s Satrapi’s life we’re talking about. Featuring the voices of Chiara Mastroianni, Catherine Deneuve, and Danielle Darrieux (95 min.).
