Located in a busy stretch of downtown Berkeley, Perdition has many of the accoutrements of what some might call a hipster barbecue restaurant. Mostly, though, Perdition distinguishes itself with touches that even someone with only moderate gourmet inclinations should appreciate: A killer draft beer selection (thanks to the Trappist/Mikkeller Bar folks, who run the place). A soda fountain machine stocked with fancy-ish Boylan sodas. And the Texas-style barbecue, while it doesn’t quite reach the life-altering level that would inspire hosannas, is pretty darn tasty. While brisket is the most iconic meat in the Texas barbecue pantheon, the real stars at Perdition are the St. Louis-cut ribs (which have a crunchy, well-spiced “bark”) and some of the juiciest hot links around. Meats come unsauced, as is traditional, but the house-made Brew BQ sauce (made with beer and coffee) is well worth a try. You’ll want to make liberal use of the roll of paper towels provided at each table.
