Filmmaker Chris Columbus brings ancient Greek mythology to contemporary America in this atypical, conceptually imaginative rite-of-passage fantasy revolving around New York City teen Percy, aka Perseus (played by Logan Lerman). Seems Percy, offspring of his mortal mother (Catherine Keener) and the god Poseidon (Kevin McKidd), is gifted with magical powers and it’s up to him – with help from fellow demi-gods Alexandra Daddario (daughter of Athena) and goat-legged satyr Brandon T. Jackson – to go out questing for Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt, now in Hades. The hamming is nothing short of heavenly for Pierce Brosnan (Chiron), Sean Bean (Zeus), Rosario Dawson (Persephone), and Joe Pantaliano (as Percy’s slovenly mortal stepdad), but the grand prize goes to Uma Thurman as snake-headed Medusa. It’s also a pleasure to see Steve Coogan in hell. Craig Titley adapted the screenplay from Rick Riordan’s young-adult novel (119 min.).
