Half-a-hanky family drama gets maximum mileage out of the old “long-lost sibling” device, as a business sharpie running out of luck (Chris Pine) makes a sentimental journey back home for his estranged father’s funeral. There, he reunites with his equally case-hardened half-sister (Elizabeth Banks) and his worn-down survivor of a mother (Michelle Pfeiffer), and discovers his nephew, an irreverent eleven-year-old boy (Michael Hall D’Addario) of the type who always haunts movies like this. Surprisingly it all hangs together, under the guidance of director Alex Kurtzman, who wrote the screenplay with Roberto Orci and Jody Lambert. There’s absolutely no reason why anyone should like a formulaic story like this, except for that mysterious thing called “chemistry.” It works perfectly. (115 min.)
