Improvisers from John Coltrane to Woody Shaw to Michael Brecker and beyond have turned pentatonic scales into a major pillar of modern jazz vocabulary. In this workshop, we'll dig deep into several pentatonic scales: where they work, different ways to learn and absorb them, and how to avoid sounding mechanical by turning them into raw material for your own personal language. Ian Carey is a San Francisco Bay Area-based jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, and educator.
