Peggy Orenstein, author of Girls & Sex

When: Wed., June 1, 7-8:30 p.m. 2016
Price: Free
Peggy Orenstein is best known for her 2011 bestseller, Cinderella Ate My Daughter, in which she writes about young women negotiating sexuality in their “post-princess” stage, high school through college. In her new book, Girls & Sex, she continues her in-depth reporting, expanding to include girls of an even younger age. Through many, many interviews, Orenstein pieces together a picture of what the sexual landscape is like for girls today — a topography that changes so quickly, it can cause huge gaps of understanding between generations. But Orenstein actually listens to girls, and doesn’t shame them. Because of that, she’s able to shine a light on ideas of consent, virginity, realities surrounding assault, and what it means to be a “slut.” Orenstein will be discussing the work at Laurel Books (1423 Broadway, Oakland) on June 1 at 7 p.m.
