Comedy, Drama
A social protest satire? From Bollywood? The potentially depressing story of two poor farmer brothers in dry, dusty Madhya Pradesh, India becomes a well written, ably acted (by non-pros as well as veteran actors), exceedingly sly commentary on contemporary Indian society – from government bumbling to media overkill to the caste system. A sad-faced peasant named Natha concludes that it’s better to kill himself and let his family get a 100,000-rupee compensation for rural suicides, than to continue struggling with the land. And then suddenly his plight becomes a national media event. Co-directors Anusha Rizvi and Mahmood Farooqui handle Rizvi’s screenplay with a light but barbed touch that Preston Sturges or Billy Wilder might have admired. Picks up where Slumdog Millionaire left off. With Omkar Das and Raghuvir Yadav as Natha and Budhia (105 min.).
