Re: “Cuts Threaten the Mission of Community Colleges

Fabulous article. As a prof. of English in a community college of the City University of New York, I applaud your insight. I also taught at Vassar this summer in a program designed to give our high-achieving students an idea of such a four year college -- beautiful, but it looks nothing like my campus. Every time I walk up the ramp into my school (of 21,000 students!), I am in awe of the diversity, and I pay homage to the commitment involved for so many of them in overcoming the obstacles that stand in the way of attending college, and remind myself of the very small dent such a program of 'enrichment' plays in opening doors for so many many deserving students. I believe community colleges, for example, begin the training of the majority of African Americans who go into science professions-- just one indication of the important role our colleges play in opening the doors to work once outside working class, people of color, and recent immigrants' reach. So far, NYC community colleges have not suffered the terrible budget whacks, but we too suffer from many restrictions, overcrowding, and cuts -- we should certainly reach out to our sister and brother schools there.
