Q. What do oppressed Florida tomato pickers, Albanian families in a blood feud, the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and convicted corporate criminal Conrad Black have in common? A. They’re all swept up in this wide-ranging, hop-skipping documentary about the various nature of debt, inspired by author Margaret Atwood’s book, Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth. It’s well-meaning but flies off in too many directions. Maybe if director Jennifer Baichwal (Manufactured Landscapes) had chosen one or two of the subjects and let the others go, it would've been redeemable, but as is, it’s still padded out with unnecessarily long establishing shots. Makes similar points as several other docs, but in a more labored and tedious way. (86 min.)
Director: Jennifer Baichwal
