Rated NR · 2011

This witty, precisely satirical and yet broadly funny road-trip comedy witnesses the collision of two kinds of aliens lost in America — a pair of dumbfounded science-fiction nerds from England (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) and the title character, a real outer-space ET escaped from forty years' confinement in an air force base (voiced hilariously by Seth Rogen). The fan boys meet the monster in the desert Southwest, a pretty scary place for all three of them, and actor/writers Pegg & Frost make the most out of the land and its denizens: rednecks, bible-thumpers, killer national-security goons (including Jason Bateman and Sigourney Weaver), and an RV-park wallflower named Ruth Buggs (Kristen Wiig). Smooth direction by Greg Mottola (Superbad). (104 min.)
