Paul Elie: "Reinventing Bach"

When: Tue., Oct. 2, 7:30-9:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $7-$15

Johann Sebastian Bach's music is everywhere: played on the radio and in concert, on commercials, and floating somewhere in outer space as one of the Voyager Golden Records, which were placed aboard the Voyager probes in 1977 to introduce extraterrestrials to the stylings of planet Earth. It's also the subject of a master study by Paul Elie in his new book, Reinventing Bach. A biography told in part through other musicians who've sampled, remixed, and remade his work, Reinventing Bach also examines the technologies -- ranging from wax-cylinder recordings to digital audio -- that make the reinventions possible. He'll speak on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the Hillside Club (2286 Cedar St., Berkeley), with live music accompaniment. 7:30 p.m., $12 in advance, $6 for students and members, $15 at the door. or 800-838-3006
