A worshipful but intelligent documentary study of avant-garde poet and pop music legend Patti Smith, a sixty-year-old rocker who’s still learning to play guitar. Writer-director Steven Sebring’s initial tone is sad and stately, almost elegiac, as Smith pines for her deceased husband, Fred “Sonic” Smith of the MC5, and visits the graves of Gregory Corso, Percy Shelley, and Arthur Rimbaud, among others. But the profile eventually chooses life, embodied by her bandmates, longtime Smith buddy Sam Shepard, and her musician sons. The rooms she has lived in look like student quarters, hasty and temporary. There’s a message there somewhere. Indispensable for Smith fans (109 min.).
