Patricia Dunn

When: Wed., Aug. 22, 6 p.m. 2012

Art imitates life in Patricia Dunn's Rebels by Accident, the story of Egyptian-American Mariam, a character born of Dunn's wish to fill the void of young, Arab heroines. Secretly believing the pop-cultural misconceptions of Egypt as a country where travel is primarily by camel, and where women are subdued and subjected to second-class status, Mariam's personal revolution begins when she's sent to live with her grandmother in Cairo. Caught between identities and countries during the Arab Spring, Mariam's adventure allows her to come to terms with her two halves. Dunn reads at the Main Branch of the Oakland Public Library (125 14th St., Oakland) on Wednesday, Aug. 22. 6 p.m., free. 510-238-6568 or
