Pato Banton & The Now Generation: Paton Banton & The Now Generation

When: Wed., Sept. 7, 9:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $15

PatoBanton was one of the first British reggae superstars, and evidently, he was groomed at an early age. Banton actually cut his teeth before adolescence, by singing and toasting at his father's sound system dances. Hit collaborations with The English Beat ("Pato and Roger a Go Talk") and UB40 would later introduce Banton to the pop world. His solo debut, Mad Professor Captures PatoBanton, is an early classic of British reggae. Banton is a spiritual performer with a sharp sense of humor, and he delivers songs of social consciousness that are alternately playful and deeply moving. His new band, The Now Generation, provides the scorching backup to his always emotional messages. At Ashkenaz (1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley) on Wednesday, Sept. 7. 9:30 p.m., $15.
