Re: “What A Trump Presidency Would Mean for Marijuana Law Reform: Worry

Forty years ago, when I began grad school to become a psychotherapist, I was lucky to be taken under the wing of Magda Proskauer, a Jungian refugee from Austria. Over the decades of her mentoship, she repeatedly spoke of the rise of Hitler. Over and over, she recalled that the intelligentsia of Germany and Austria failed to take the threat he posed seriously. In the lead up to his election, coffee houses were filled with folks joking about the little buffoon.

According to Magda, she and her political cohorts were blinded by their unconsciously ingrained class bigotry. They so discounted the fools who were titilated by him, that they didn't offer a coherent alternative. She believed that when it was necessary to acknowledge the fears of the masses and offer support to find solutions, they were met with contempt instaed.

Contempt rarely deepens conversations or points to solutions. It's tough to avoid in these sorts of situations. The costs of getting stuck there are just too great. Let's support one another to learn from humanity's earlier errors, so we can avoid repeating them.
