Parquet Courts

When: Fri., June 7, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $10-$12

The members of Brooklyn-based Parquet Courts realized a seemingly simple but impressive goal on their 2012 debut album, Light Up Gold, which evokes alternative rock from the Seventies to early Nineties in a surprisingly refreshing -- and smart -- way. In little more than half an hour, Parquet Courts teases out the sounds of Buzzcocks, The Smiths, Pixies, Pavement, Sonic Youth, and more. The album's standout track, "Stoned and Starving," chronicles the plight of a man who's thoroughly baked and has no idea how or where to find food to fill his stomach, only in much less dramatic terms. The track charmingly channels the frank, everyman storytelling of Jonathan Richman, as well as, fittingly, the bleating guitar work and melodic style of The Modern Lovers. Catch Parquet Courts live to see how it has garnered a devoted fanbase less than three years after its formation. With Pure Bliss and Meat Market at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records (420 40th St., Oakland).
