Producer Emmanuel Benbihy hired eighteen teams of international directors -- mostly American -- to write and direct eighteen five-minute narrative shorts, each based in a different Paris neighborhood, on the common theme of love. Results vary. The big names (the Coen Bros., Wes Craven, Tom Tykwer, Gus Van Sant) generally tread water amicably with travelogue stuff, but it's the social commentary by German Oliver Schmitz and the Brazilian team of Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas that really gets a grip on the place. And Alexander Payne's poignant portrait of a lonely American woman thrilled to be in the city of her dreams is the best of all. Starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Elijah Wood, Natalie Portman, Juliette Binoche, Gena Rowlands, Steve Buscemi, and many more.
