LAIKA studios, the Portland, Oregon-based animation house that made Coraline, falters with this similarly morbid stop-motion 3D effort, which uses the same technology to tell the routine story of a picked-on kid who can see ghosts. The impoverished story line and murky amber tone make for a slightly depressing experience as Norman (voice of Kodi Smit-McPhee) contends with the undead in order to lift a witch’s curse. Big joke: Modern life is scary to the 17th-century zombies Norman meets, because the people of the 21st-century are more grotesque by far than the walking dead. Co-directors Chris Butler (Coraline, Corpse Bride) and Sam Fell (The Tale of Despereaux) have both been involved with better work. Screenplay by Butler. Also with the voices of Casey Affleck, John Goodman, and Jodelle Ferland. (101 min.)
