Gus Van Sant returns to Portland, Oregon for yet another story of teenage loneliness and crime, but compared to his Columbine movie Elephant, this oblique study of a sensitive-but-numb skateboarder mixed up in a murder infiltrates its shy, inarticulate characters instead of confronting them directly. That’s a good thing. But what made Van Sant use Nino Rota’s scores from Juliet of the Spirits and Amarcord when so much good contemporary music exists? Adapted with perfect Van Sant pacing (plus beautiful cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Rain Kathy Li) from the young adult novel by Blake Nelson, and starring non-actor Gabe Nevins as Alex (78 min.).
