Paramount Movie Classics Series: Rebecca

When: Fri., Feb. 5, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $5

A young bride (Joan Fontaine) muscles for affection from her rich widower husband (Laurence Olivier), who is still obsessed with his dead wife, Rebecca. They move to an opulent English manor, where the ghost of Rebecca seems omnipresent. Fontaine and Oliver both deliver evocative performances in this Gothic thriller, as does Judith Anderson, playing a malevolent housekeeper. Director Alfred Hitchcock snagged Best Picture for Rebeccain 1940, and to this day it remains a thoroughly entrancing film. Rebecca screens Friday, Feb. 5, as part of the Paramount Movie Classics series, which runs every first Friday of the month at Paramount Theatre (2025 Broadway St., Oakland). It's a rare chance to see a black-and-white auteur film in a three-tiered art deco theater. Doors open at 7 p.m., and audience members get treated to an old-fashioned prize wheel instead of the usual Stella Artois commercials. Curtain goes up at 8 p.m., $5.
