Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

The loopholes in our so-called sanctuary city ate big enough to drive a couple ICE vans through. The city needs to take charge of OPD agreements and keep its promise to its residents.

Re: “Inside Immigration Court: Are Deportation Hearings In The Bay Area Unconstitutional?

This well researched article is truly heartbreaking and even more so when you realize that all these unconstitutional shennanigans were happening under our constitutional lawyer president.
I hope folks that read this will support AB6 and SB3. Those bills, because they have a price tag, will have trouble making it through the leg much less getting our stingy governor's signature.

Re: “I Was Kicked Out of Federal Immigration Court — Because I'm a Journalist

We should all be attending these as often as possible. I'm still annoyed that I was asked to provide ID to be allowed into a BART meeting.

Re: “Almodóvar Redeems Himself with Julieta

Not a single scene, in all its crayon box beauty, was believable. I had read other reviews that called it a melodrama but even then I was not prepared for how false this movie , supposedly delineating a woman's life (topic for another time-directors who supposedly make women's movies because we're such a distinct species ...remember Woody Allen?) and her guilt over, what, being mildly pissed that her husband had been bedding her friend all along and even though she knew that from the get.
I was also prepared for a bleak flick given the topic was the estrangement of a beloved daughter. But it was not believable so I simply didn't care. When it ended abruptly, I was just glad to go home to my warm house after sitting in a cold theater watching time pass.

Re: “Oakland Police Union Writes $1,400 Check to Unseat Councilmember Noel Gallo

She was asked at the Democratic Forum Thursday and she kind've seemed to support it but now that I think about it, did not actually say that. Also said she wasn't supporting Measure JJ, renters' protections.

Re: “Mayor's Power Will Grow if Voters Approve Oakland Police Commission

The city administrator, who presently supervises and hires and fires the chief, works at the pleasure of the mayor so whoever is the mayor already has that power.
But the new commission would water down the mayor's power over control of OPD, and up until now not even federal oversight has been able to reform that department. This charter change has the potential to begin that shift towards community control and significant reform.

Re: “Town Business: Did OPOA Gut Oakland's Police Commission?

I am still formulating my thoughts on the final proposal and the coalition will set a date to meet and vote on whether to endorse it after Tuesday's final council vote.
At one point we had discussed an "elastic clause" with CM Kalb and CM Gallo to prevent the scope from being narrowed. We'll continue to lobby for that language until Tuesday evening.
We are disappointed in the mayor and council's inflexibility on the issue of her appointments. It seems a compromise to this
mayor is that she gets everything she wants.

But it is NOT gutted and is stronger than the original council proposal. We hope people will understand the level of hard work put in by both the coalition-all of us, including people who emailed, called or spoke at council and the CMs who struggled with us and each other. This is landmark legislation that many said couldn't be done. In a city with a tradition of terrible police misconduct and little credibility, change has come.
