.Painted Palms

Balmy indie group Painted Palms perform on Thursday, August 27th.

Forever, the Polyvinyl-released debut album of San Francisco’s Painted Palms, featured balmy indie fare, saturated with cushy keys and buoyant vocal hooks. Horizons, Painted Palms’ new full-length, finds the group whittled down somewhat, opting more for taut high-hat and bass interplay than the bristly gauze of Forever. There are still plenty of familiar pop tropes, namely in the breathy, affected vocals of Christopher Prudhomme, but Painted Palms seems to aim more for a decidedly sleek and modern. Case in point: the cover’s paper-cup origami rosebud. It’s perhaps intentional likeness to female genitalia is the cue to mention Antwon — of It’s like I died in that muthafuckin’ pussy notoriety — the Angeleno rapper whose welcomed habit of crashing rock shows continues at Painted Palms’ record release event for Horizons at the Rickshaw Stop (155 Fell St.) on Thursday.
