Action, Crime drama
Beat Takeshi, aka Takeshi Kitano, returns to his beloved yakuza genre with a fairly perfunctory tale of double-crosses and ultra-violence among the members of a contemporary Tokyo crime family. Beat Takeshi writes, directs, co-edits, and stars as Otomo, a taciturn, sardonic, mid-level thug quietly awaiting his chance to move up the ladder – if “quietly” means chopsticks in ears, a snake in the bathroom, and a horrible dentist appointment. The emphasis is on Otomo’s dispassionate brutality, which gradually becomes humorous as he squats like a frog on a lily pad in the middle of a boiling pond. Able supporting performances by Kippei Shiina, Ryo Kase, and Tomokazu Miura as fellow gangsters. (109 min.)
