Hernia Hill Half Marathon 10K, 5K Run/Walk, 1M Kids' Run. This sixteenth annual event includes a barbecue, awards, and prize money for breaking course records. Scenic out and back, paved and fire trail with some hernia hills. Kenwood Footrace 3K/10K The 31st annual Kenwood Footrace is the oldest and second-largest running event in Sonoma County. Run on scenic, wine country roads, USTAF-certified. Stay for the Fourth of July Parade and pancake breakfast. Free entry with race bib to World Championship Pillow Fights and related festivities (food, music, entertainment). Races start at 7:30 a.m. at Plaza Park in Kenwood. $20 entry fee before June 29, $25 after. Race-day registration permitted. 707-569-1494.

Morgan Hill Freedom 5000 Meter Race: Run/Walk A family festival that includes breakfast, goody bag, and Fourth of July Parade after race. Two loops; paved, flat, fast course. Start at PA Walsh School, 353 W. Main. Run San Ramon Independence Day Classic 5K/10K A paved loop course at San Ramon Central Park. The 5K run/walk and 3K fun walk begin at 8:30 a.m.; the 10K run at 8:45 a.m. $20 postmarked by June 21 and $25 on race day. Preregistration family rate for three or more is $17 per person. San Francisco Ocean Beach 5K and 6 Mile Benefits Project Open Hand. Run is on the hard-packed sand. The Sierra Xtreme Adventure Racing Series The first race in this series is eight to twelve hours long, challenging the racer with bouldering, creeking, orienteering, mountain biking, and trail running at Grant Ranch in San Jose. The races are designed for beginners to intermediate racers. You can run solo ($150) or with a team of up to four members ($525). VirtuActive.com

Sunday, July 11 Monterey Bay Challenge Olympic: 1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run; Sprint: 0.75K swim, 20K bike, 5K run. Divisions by age group and sex, and also a Clydesdale (men over 200 lbs.) and Athena (women over 160 lbs.) division. The swim is in the Monterey Bay, parallel to the shore; the bike loop starts and ends at the Seascape Resort in Aptos; and the scenic run is on packed dirt and street (but miles four to six are on the beach on packed sand). Check-in is on Saturday, July 10. The first wave begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
