Why would anyone want to make, let alone buy a ticket for, a satiric account of cynical American campaign consultants swarming into Bolivia during that country’s presidential elections to hard-sell their clients/candidates while simultaneously treating the locals with barely concealed contempt? Answer: Sandra Bullock. Hollywood’s favorite everywoman heads an able cast – Billy Bob Thornton, Ann Dowd, Scoot McNairy, Joaquim de Almeida – but her character, a highly strung image fixer loosely based on James Carville, is the original Ugly American, and the vehicle wears out its welcome early. Peter Straughan’s screenplay, based on the 2005 documentary of the same name by Rachel Boynton, only reiterates the worst tendencies of the American political system. Do we really need a far-fetched comedy to remind us of that? Exec-produced by Bullock for Participant Media, with George Clooney and Grant Heslov among the other producers (108 min.).
Director: David Gordon Green
Writer: Peter Straughan and Rachel Boynton
Producer: Stuart M. Besser, Sandra Bullock, George Clooney and Nina Wolarsky
Cast: Sandra Bullock, Billy Bob Thornton and Zoe Kazan
