In Orphan, John and Kate finally get their comeuppance from that brood they generated. Well, not actually. But the parents as played by Vera Farmigia and Peter Sarsgaard in this overlong movie happen to be called John and Kate, and are every bit as dysfunctional and ridiculous as the reality show stars. After the stillborn death of their third child, the couple decides to adopt Esther, a creepy, pale kid with a Russian accent whose previous home was mysteriously burned down. You know, because that’s the kid you want to adopt to mend your broken heart. Clichés and cruel violence involving children follow, but never result in a movie worth seeing. Just worth walking away from. Fast (123 min.).
