Re: “Pot Is a National Security Issue

Its about way more than pot DECRIMINALIZATION,( no state has embraced outright legalization, now they want a piece of the action) although that may be the key issue that breaks the logjam caused by almost 100 years of racist, fear based dogma. Use, abuse and addiction need to seen in their full 3 dimensional context of the drug used, the setting it is used in and the set, or the things the user brings into the picture to begin with, Its a continuum, not a linear or even circular progression. Most drug use can and is managed, like smoking and alcohol consumption and there are rituals sanctions and controls in place to deal with harms associated with their use. It is immoral and counterproductive to criminalize what is essentially at the extreme form, a medical issue. We are still in the DARK AGES when it comes to drug issues. We used to drown people back in in the day, if they drowned and died, then they were exonerated of sorcery, if they lived it was proof of "guilt" and they were burned at the stake.tHIS IS ANALOGOUS TO HOW WE TREAT DRUG USE, ABUSE AND ADDICTION AND YES THEY ARE VERY DIFFERENT.AND THEN THERE IS THE WHOLE ISSUE OF PRIVELIDGE AND LICIT VS ILLICIT USE. Licit is when you got enough PRIVELIDGE ( AS IN CELEBRITY) to enjoy drugs on a whole different level, its like the old double standard, you go to celebrity rehab, get interviewed by Oprah, do a concert for charity and go on about your life. If you are poor its a whole different experience. If you get arrested, its because all the laws are aimed at the least privelidged and if you are arrested and cant afford a celebrity dope lawyer, you are really in deep doo-doo. ALL THIS HAPPENS AT PUBLIC EXPENSE. Worst of all, you are denied at every level from rentals to college funds, jobs, your rehab is a prison cell and your life is never the same, even if you never smoke, drink, toke, snort or fix ever again.
DAVID Lee Roth quipped "i used to have a drug problem and then I got money." THE GATEWAY was actually created by the law, by lumping them all together in the prohibited ( prounounced smuggled) category. Where are all the consevatives crying for less government regulation, but when it comes to sex and drugs, there they are, all in yo bizznezz. I"m out on that one. PEEZY WITH THE STICKY ICKY

Re: “Berkeley Free Clinic Faces Tough Times

All the clinics and services that serve the poor and the marginalized are now under the knife. The voices that would have decried these cuts just 2 months ago now speak of "common ground" and re-alignment, euphemisms for abdication of state responsibilty to counties that are either broke or openly hostile to the types of services being targeted. At the federal level, Obama officials pat themselves on the back for having the courage to sekk defense cuts, knowing those cuta target VA clinics. A rose( or something less pleasant) by any other name is still a rose.
