Opeth with Mastadon

When: Fri., April 27, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $35

Mastodon has had one of the most violently shifting careers in recent metal history. When its debut album, Remission, was released ten years ago, people basically went ape-shit. Few bands had produced such a cohesive, forceful, singular vision of grinding, proggy -- jazzy, even -- sludge metal. Sure enough, Mastodon ushered in a new wave of prog metal followers. But with Remission's follow-up, Leviathan, it was clear that this was a band that had big ideas and could not be contained, creatively or otherwise. That wasn't necessarily welcome news. The concept/progginess reached new, accessible heights with 2009's Crack the Skye, which not only thrust Mastodon into the mainstream but effectively alienated a large portion of its original fanbase. It didn't matter much, since it also exposed the band to a much wider, younger crowd. The Hunter sees Mastodon continuing down the path to mainstream acceptance and Grammy awards, but live, it's easier to see how the band's earlier riff-based work gels with its later, poppier material. And, anyway, if there's one thing people can count on, it's that Mastodon won't stop trying to out-do itself. At The Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Friday, Apr. 27, with Ghost and Opeth. 8 p.m., $32.50.
