OPD Warns of Fake Craigslist Sellers

The Oakland Police Department is circulating a warning to neighborhood groups about a trend involving fake Craigslist sales.

"We have had 3 recent armed robberies," writes Captain Anthony Toribio, "with the following commonalities:

"The victim attempts to buy a laptop or other computer equipment from someone on Craigslist. The victim shows up to a location" — so far, this has happened on residential streets in Rockridge and Temescal — "with cash in hand. The suspect approaches, wearing a bandana and armed with a handgun, and robs the victim.

"Our investigators are actively working on these cases and will hopefully identify the person(s) responsible. Community members need to use caution when making these transactions. I suggest they are made in public or well travelled places. In addition, all suspicious people should be reported to OPD."
