Oakland has experienced a welcome drop in violent crime so far this year, but its declining homicide rate is nothing compared to what’s happening across the bay. The Chron reports that San Francisco’s homicide rate has plummeted an amazing 50 percent so far this year, dropping to its lowest level since 2000. San Francisco police officials credit the decline to a crackdown on violent criminals. According to the newspaper, Deputy Chief Kevin Cashman said police concluded that a small number of criminals was responsible for a large share of violent crime, and that taking those people off the streets is leading to the drop in homicides. Sounds pretty much like the advice a policing expert from New York gave Oakland more than two years ago.
