Drama, Horror, Romance
Plenty of atmosphere in Jim Jarmusch’s vampire love story, but the story is threadbare. Ghostly Eve (Tilda Swinton, perfectly cast) carries on her undead existence in contemporary Tangier, Morocco, where she sips purified blood -- nobody bites necks anymore, too risky -- with 16th-century English playwright Christopher “Kit” Marlowe (John Hurt). But Eve misses music-loving night-dweller Adam (Tom Hiddleston), who occupies an apartment house in the ruins of Detroit and buys curios from an oblivious local guy (Arnon Yelchin). Eve visits Adam, they bicker, then they return to Tangier. That’s about it. Writer-director Jarmusch sets the scenes perfectly, but he should have hired a script doctor to give it a better through-story. Mia Wasikowska and Jeffery Wright round out the blue-chip, stranded cast (123 min.).
