One Hundred Suns CD Release

When: Sun., March 1, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $8

Go to a metal show these days and you're likely to hear a diverse lineup: a thrashy female-fronted black metal band; a progressive jazz outfit that elicits sexy dance moves; weirdo noise rock that makes the guys in Slayer-patched jean jackets spill their beers. Few heavy bands these days are content to adhere to one distinct style, and many fans embrace the rampant experimentalism. San Francisco-/Brooklyn-based One Hundred Suns micro-genre-mashes in the extreme end of the pool: dark and grindy one moment, explosive and shrieking the next. San Francisco trio Grayceon mixes things up no matter who's on the bill; the electric cello provides surprising textural depth to the guitar shredding. Both bands play Thee Parkside (1600 17th St., San Francisco) on March 1 with '90s alt-rock band the Wanteds and the gloomy Nero Order. 8 p.m., $8.
